Can you drill acrylic sheets?

Plexiglass, sometimes called transparent thermoplastic, acrylic, Lucite and Perspex is a polymer that is often used as an alternative to glass. Valued for being shatter-resistant, plexiglass is used on construction projects that require durable, light plastic. Unfortunately, it can be brittle under certain force and scratch easily, so it must be handled with care while you are working with it. There are a number of plexiglass-safe tools and techniques that can be used to avoid cracking or melting the material. This article will tell you how to drill plexiglass.

Steps

1.Wear safety goggles. Acrylic chips can easily fly off during drilling and be a health hazard

2.Buy a plexiglass drill or plexiglass drill bits that can be used with a regular drill. These bits have a different geometric structure that is designed to puncture acrylic more easily and they are less likely to melt plexiglass. They are available in hardware stores and online.

You can also use a drill press working at about 500 to 1000 RPM. Acrylic sheet drill bits are available for drill presses.

3.Practice with smaller pieces of scrap acrylic before attempting to drill into a large sheet.

4.Place your plexiglass sheet on top of a piece of scrap plexiglass, (one that is already ruined), or a piece of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF.) This will make it less likely that you will chip the back of the board or scratch it when the drill bit goes through.

5.Clamp both sheets to a secure surface. Use as many clamps as is necessary to secure the sheet. For larger sheets you will need more clamps.

6.Make sure that the hole you will cut is not near the edge of the plexiglass piece. Acrylic is known for chipping near the edge when it is punctured.

7.Plug in your drill or place a charged battery inside it.

8.Start to drill slowly into the sheet of plexiglass. You do not need to center punch acrylic like you do with metal.

9.Keep a steady, slow pace. Aim for a feed rate of about 3.5 inches (89mm) per minute. Acrylic drill bits will produce plastic shavings. Once they start to surround the drill bit, you can stop and remove them to get a better view of what you are doing.

10.If your sheet is thick, do peck drilling, going a little at the time so that you can remove the shavings from your hole and allow the drill time to cool. This will also help to prevent melting.

Plastic Artist-Acrylic Processing Technology

Acrylic can be used casting, injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, laser engraving, laser cutting and other processes. Casting molding Casting molding for forming plexiglass sheet, bar and other profiles, that is, body-bulk polymerization method of forming profiles. After casting molded products need to be post-processed, post-processing conditions are incubated at 60 ℃ 2 hours, 120 ℃ for 2 hours. Injection molding Injection molding using suspension polymerization obtained pellets, molding in the ordinary plunger or screw injection molding machine. Process parameters include screw injection molding machine, plunger injection molding machine, barrel temperature, injection molding products also need to eliminate the internal stress treatment, processing in the hot air circulation oven at 70 ~ 80 ℃, processing time as the thickness of acrylic products, the general All about 4 hours. Thermoforming Thermoforming is the process of making plexiglass sheets or she...

Development Background of LED Diffuser Sheet

Led diffuser plate  is an important part from the past to now. Glass was used as the lampshade initially, but the glass was not brittle and the diffusion effect of light was not very good. It was difficult to meet the lighting requirements. Later, it gradually developed to replace glass with resin, but if only transparent resin lampshade, although the light transmittance is high, the basic can reach more than 90%, but the light diffusion effect is not ideal, poor light concealment. The white resin, whose light transmittance is too low, seriously affects the illumination of the LED lamp. In this case, techniques such as adding milky white pigments and surface scrubbing aids are used. Although this solves the issue of light source shielding, there is an excessively low light transmittance, which seriously affects the efficacy of LED lighting. Therefore, the problem of diffusion masks has been plagued by problems. In such a contradictory problem of light rate and light source shieldin...

Is Acrylic Suitable for Lights?

When decorating a room, in addition to some decoration materials, you also need to install lamps and lanterns. Because lamps and lanterns are very important in people's life and can provide lighting. In the dark night, you can work and live as in the daytime. In recent years, acrylic lamps are especially popular. There are many types of acrylic lamps, and people may not know how to choose when they are choosing. In this blog post, I will give you details on how to choose acrylic lights and what to look for when installing acrylic lights .   The advantages of acrylic lights Color The color is very durable. Acrylic panels are glossy, bright and colorful, and the colors are durable for 5-8 years. In other words, it will not change or fade in 5-8 years. Transparent High light transmission. Transparent  acrylic sheets  provide over 90% light transmission. The built-in light source provides uniform and soft nighttime brightness. Compared to neon, acrylic letters as a whole are ...
